Tuscan, 1936. Giovanni Mansani is 30 years old with a good job as a bank clerk, a wife and a small kid. His life flows on without worries or anxieties yet without any deep emotional involvement. One day, during one his daily journeys as a commuter to Livourna, the place he used to live when he was young and where he just got a new job, he bumps into Maria at the train station. She is brunette. She used to be blond. He doesn't recognise her immediately. He lets her go, dumbfounded. Then the memories come back : the sea, the dunes, the pine trees, his love of youth. Giovanni manages to see her again and gives her a date, on the beach after work. She has been with many other men. It shouldn't be difficult to convince her again. Maria yields to Giovanni's advances. For Giovanni the whole matter is over. But then Maria gives him an other date.
